Glam On Thy Hell.Alias G.O.T.H.

Metal rock allo stato puro(di sicuro questo articolo non piacerà alle fans dei ciuffoloni Benji e Fede,ma,tranquilli,me ne farò una ragione)e un carisma potente sono le caratteristiche principali di questa band americana-portoghese(un mix decisamente affascinante,non c'è che dire),che si sta conquistando una bella fetta di mercato internazionale con la loro musica coinvolgente e intrigante.

Grande grinta pervade le loro canzoni,in un sapiente miscuglio di voci (femminili e maschili)dal potere ipnotizzante e dalle atmosfere gotiche, nel mood di Edgar Allan Poe:la summa della mente creativa di Ivan e Kate Prim sta tutta nel loro cd,uscito il 17 giugno;tredici canzoni che parlano di amore(avete presente Marco Carta e "tu sarai la forza mia"?Ecco,tutto il contrario)

L'amore che impregna,che satura la musica dei G.O.T.H non è di certo un sentimento angelicato,da Dolce Stil Novo,per intenderci;rappresenta invece il dolore,la sofferenza e tutto lo spasimo che  fanno da corollario a questa umana emozione

Ed è proprio questo il punto:la loro musica è vera,perché rappresenta in pieno le percezioni di ogni individuo.I fans lo sanno e sono una marea;c'è una legione là fuori a supportare i G.O.T.H!

Ciao ragazzi!Prima di tutto vorrei sapere qualcosa di voi. Quando avete iniziato a suonare insieme e soprattutto come è nato il nome G.O.T.H?

 Ivan-Piacere di conoscerti!Conoscevo già da tempo Kate,e quando ho pensato ad una voce femminile per questo progetto ho realizzato che era proprio lei la risorsa che cercavo;così abbiamo iniziato a cantare in coppia.
Ho registrato tutti i pezzi dell'album,l'ho prodotto insieme al mio amico Joào Pereira e sono l'autore di tutte le musiche e testi del cd.

Kate- Successivamente siamo andati in tour negli Stati Uniti e abbiamo fatto delle audizioni per cercare altri membri che dessero spessore al gruppo;ecco quindi Dean alla chitarra,Christina Von Eerie al basso e Sam,il nuovo batterista, che arriva dall'Inghilterra.

Ivan- G.O.T.H significa "Glam On Thy Hell".E' un po' la metafora di come percepisco la mia vita;  in una stamberga o in un sontuoso palazzo,all'inferno o in paradiso....beh il fascino e le tue qualità DEVONO SEMPRE essere presenti!

 Il vostro nuovo album è uscito da poche settimane(lo scorso 17 giugno).Come lo descrivereste?

 Ivan-Ho scelto le canzoni più adatte per  questo nostro primo album tra una rosa di 50 tracce.I testi dei brani sono un mix di sensazioni e profezie che solo in pochi capiranno(e loro sanno chi sono.)

Kate- Anche se i temi principali  rimangono l'amore,la morte e tutte le loro affascinanti declinazioni,c'è un messaggio segreto che pervade l'album,che connette i pittori ai poeti e soprattutto  agli esseri spirituali.

Ivan-Non solo i testi ma anche le canzoni derivano da specifiche dinamiche ed evoluzioni,ti fanno sentire a disagio,ti fanno provare sentimenti inquietanti;infatti il nostro chitarrista Dean dice:"la parte più importante delle nostre canzoni durante i live è il silenzio".

 ONLY ONE è primo singolo estratto dall'album.Mi piace molto questa canzone e le sue bellissime melodie.E' veramente una bomba,ragazzi!Qual è il significato del brano?Trovo cool anche il video,che alterna immagini prese da un live,tra momenti on stage e momenti backstage.Avete un sacco di fans-che chiamate legioni.Che tipo di rapporto avete con i vostri supporters?

Ivan-Questa canzone fa esattamente vedere come percepisco la  religione.Quando suoniamo dal vivo dico sempre:"Questa è dedicata a tutti i preti che hanno tentato di salvare la mia anima;brucerò all'inferno,ma non sarò l'unico."

 Il video non è del tutto esplicito,però è un modo per dire hey,sono qui,esisto,faccio ciò che voglio e vi smaschererò tutti!

Kate-Questa è la mia canzone preferita e suonarla dal vivo è fortissimo!(e ovviamente i nostri fans l'adorano)

"Goth legion"-la legione dei Goth- è il modo in cui ci piace chiamare le persone che ci seguono;cerchiamo di dare loro tutte le attenzioni che meritano,perché sono loro che ci permettono di elevare all'ennesimo grado la nostra voce

 Il tema centrale dell'album è l'Amore.Descrivete non solo il lato idilliaco del sentimento,ma anche tutto quel corollario di emozioni che circonda questa emozione,come il dolore,lo sgomento,la desolazione.Ci sono elementi autobiografici nei vostri brani?E  secondo voi-domanda delle domande-cos'è l'Amore?

 Ivan-L'amore è tutto quello e anche molto di più.Prendiamo l'esempio delle tante persone che hanno visto la morte con i loro occhi ma non ne sono stati presi.

Altri invece sono stati baciati dall'amore ma non l'hanno vissuto.L'amore non potrà mai avere una definizione precisa perché l'essere umano non è in grado di capire l'intera questione.

Quanti sono morti per amore e quanti altri hanno ucciso per amore;l'amore è il piu' potente dei sentimenti,perché,nel bene e nel male,è capace di far commettere ogni tipo di azione....finché morte non ci separi...

 Ecco,non mi piacciono i lieto fine nei film e nei libri;per questo motivo amo Tim Burton e il film(e relativa colonna sonora)della mia vita è Edward mani di forbice

Katie-Amo anche io quel film,ma preferisco i lieto fine;tutte le ragazze sognano un bellissimo principe azzurro,è colpa di Walt Disney!(risata)

Ivan-Capisci cosa intendo???

Ragazzi parlatemi dei vostri metodi creativi.Come componete le vostre canzoni?Siete tutti coinvolti nel "flusso della creazione"?Arriva prima la melodia e poi aggiungete le parole,o viceversa?

Ivan-Diciamo che parte sempre da una melodia;non forzo mai me stesso,non mi metto al piano o prendo in mano la chitarra per cercare il motivo giusto:arriverà quando deve arrivare

Dopo che suono i versi in acustico e vedo che sono buoni faccio gli arrangiamenti;è un po' come un quadro,se l'abbozzo è perfetto basta solo enfatizzare un dettaglio per dargli piu' "verve",ecco,io faccio lo stesso con la musica
Mi piace scrivere e non lascio molta libertà agli altri mentre sono preso nel processo creativo,perché la cosa mi renderebbe meno genuino e spontaneo;l'ultimo passo è quello di  aggiungere  le parole,perché i versi e le sillabe devono sempre accordarsi con la metrica della melodia

Quali artisti/musicisti influenzano il suono dei G.O.T.H?Quale musica ascoltate di solito?

 Kate-Mi piace molto la musica contemporanea,la mia artista preferita è Tarja Turunen(cantante finlandese,ex voce dei Nightwish-n.d.r)e adoro il genere musicale chiamato "metal sinfonico",come i vecchi Nightwish,Epica,Kamelot,Blind Guardian,Sonata Arctica,Iced Earth...

Ivan-Io invece preferisco il rock degli anni 70 e 80,quelli che ascoltava mio padre.Sono un fan di Elvis,Aerosmith,Wasp,Iron Maiden,White Snake,Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple...

Riguardo agli artisti che influenzano la nostra musica,non saprei proprio dirti,lascio la risposta al parere degli altri...

Parliamo un po' della scena musicale americana.Come stanno andando le cose lì?I giovani talenti hanno occasioni di emergere senza dover passare dai soliti talent show??

Ivan-L'America è molto diversa dall'Europa.Gli Stati Uniti hanno una loro "ricetta"che riguarda la musica e la produzione artistica,mentre l'Europa ne ha un'altra. In America ci sono parecchie band che fanno ottima musica e tutti vogliono diventare delle rockstars,ma onestamente,tutti questi gruppi mi sembrano uguali.
Penso  ci siano due modi per ottenere visibilità,a prescindere che tu faccia buona o cattiva musica:il primo modo,la cosiddetta "vecchia scuola",è quello di suonare in ogni posto e farsi la gavetta;l'altra strada da percorrere è quella di avere qualcuno che finanzi la tua musica.

Kate Il primo mese che abbiamo passato negli States per fare le prove ci capitava,nel tragitto verso il New Jersey,di ascoltare sempre le stesse canzoni alla radio;una sorta di loop di 6 o 7 canzoni,sempre quelle,sempre le stesse!

Ivan Esatto,le stesse canzoni...una tortura.Non do la colpa alle persone,bensì al sistema,che impone gli stessi artisti

Kate Ovviamente le radio sono pagate per trasmettere quelle canzoni;quello che sta succedendo è che l'industria musicale sta diventando un prodotto finto,di plastica

Ivan Onore a quelli che non permettono al rock di morire;una cosa mi preoccupa:quando gli Iron Miaden,AC/DC,Ozzy,Metallica,Aerosmith e gli altri "big" non ci saranno più,chi farà la storia della musica???

Kate-Questi programmi tv sono fatti apposta per fare soldi sui sogni dei partecipanti;certamente alcune persone e gli sponsors di questi format sono felicissimi,perché sanno che si arricchiranno alla grande durante il programma e molto di più una volta che lo show sarà finito

Ivan-Questi programmi sono come una guerra,tipo quella tra Ovest e Est:L'Ovest vende armi e munizioni alla fazione dell'Est,è la stessa identica cosa!Gli shows hanno dietro giganteschi format televisivi,così danno alla gente quello che vogliono loro.La gente dovrebbe sapere che queste multinazionali lo fanno perché sanno che guadagneranno milioni:il vincitore dei talent firma un contratto con una major che non correrà nessun rischio di perdita;lui(o lei)inciderà un album,farà un tour,venderà la propria immagine(cosa fighissima),ma nel giro di pochi mesi verrà dimenticato/a.

 Anche gli artisti più "navigati"provano nervosimo prima di suonare sul palco.E voi ragazzi?Vi capita mai di sentirvi ansiosi,inquieti,tesi,prima di un concerto?

Kate-Siamo sempre un po' nervosi prima di uno show perché vogliamo mostrarci il più rilassati possibile.Un paio di ore prima di salire sul palco ciascuno di noi ha il suo momento per prepararsi;personalmente io amo sempre fare qualcosa,Ivan,al contrario,preferisce stare solo.

Ivan-  Ho un mio personale rituale prima di ogni concerto,non voglio parlare con nessuno,voglio solo rimanere da solo in una stanza a prepararmi prima di salire sul palco e scatenare il casino con la band!

Kate-Il 17 giugno è uscito il nostro album con la Musicarchy Media.La nostra etichetta Musicarchy Media sta facendo un ottimo lavoro!Intanto stiamo preparando il tour europeo,che sarà pazzesco;venite a vederci,non dovete assolutamente perdervi i nostri shows!

Some weeks ago they released a simply epic album:gothic atmospheres blended with distorted guitars,melodies and beautiful voices.A super duper mix;a hypnotic effect and a strong image.

·         Hi guys!First of all,i would like to know a little more about you .When did you start playing together as a band?And how did you come up with the name G.O.T.H?

·       

 Ivan- Nice to meet you. I had already known Kate and when I thought about a singer for this project, I realized that she was an asset for what I had in mind and we decided to sing in duet.

I recorded all the instruments on the album, produced with my friend João Pereira and I am the author for all the Music and lyrics of this cd.

Kate- Later we went to a tour in United States of America and there we did an audition for the other members (Dean) on guitar and (Christina Von Eerie) on bass, our new member (Sam) is the drummer from UK.

Ivan- G.O.T.H means Glam On Thy Hell is like a metaphor of how I sense my life, whether you're in a poor house or in a Palace or in Hell or paradise the glamour and your values must always be present.

A brand new album is out(since June17).How would you describe it?

Ivan- I wrote between 40 to 50 songs to choose the right songs for this first album. The lyrics as the songs are a mixture of feelings and prophecies that only few will understand (they know who they are).

Kate- Although the main theme is the love and death in all it glamorous evidence there is a secret message in the whole album that can connect the painters to poets and especially spiritual beings.

Ivan- Not only the lyrics but also the songs derived from certain chords and dynamics, make you feel very uncomfortable or with a disturbing feeling, our guitarist Dean says: " the most important part of our songs when we play live is silence".

ONLY ONE is the first single taken from the album.I definitely love this song and its beautiful melodies.!Real dope,guys! What’s the meaning of this track?The video is also cool:it shows some moments on stage/backstage during a gig.You have legions of fans out there.What kinda relationship do you have with them?

Ivan-This song has an extremely direct message about how I see religion. When we play live I always say: " This is for all the priests that tried to save my soul, I will burn in Hell, but I'm not the only One".

The video is not obvious, but it's a way for me to say that I'm here, I exist, I'm going to do what I want and unmask you all.

 Kate- This is my favorite song and playing it live is extremely powerful and our fans love it. Goth legion is what we call the people who follow us and we try to give them all the attention they deserve, because they elevate our loudest voice.

·         Your album’s main topic is Love.You describe the happy side of this feeling together with collateral emotions such as pain,distress,bleakness.Is there something autobiographical in them?What is Love in your opinion?

Ivan- Love is all that and much more. Giving the example of how many people have witnessed death and they have never been kissed by it.

Others have been kissed by love and didn’t live. Love will never have a definition because the human being isn't able to understand the whole picture.

How many people died for love and how many killed for love, love is the most powerful of the feelings because it is capable of anything for better and for worse, .....until death do us part.....

I don't like happy endings in books or movies for this reason I love Tim Burton and the movie of my life as well as the soundtrack is Edward Scissorhands.

Kate- I love that movie too but I prefer happy endings all girls dream of the handsome prince, it's Disney's fault... (laughs)

Ivan- See what I mean?

·         What about your creative method?How do you compose your songs?All of you are involved in the process?Melody first and then come the lyrics or viceversa?

Ivan- It always starts with a main melody, always with the chorus and never force myself, never put myself at the piano or pick up a guitar looking for a good tune it will appear when it has to appear.

After I play the verses in acoustic if the sound looks good I do the arrangements and the verses, as a painting if the stub is good is worth by itself if you want to highlight a detail giving it a bit color, perfect, and I do the same in music.

I like to write and I don't give too much freedom to others to get involved when I'm creating, because it ceases to be something genuine of me, and the last thing I do are the lyrics because the tune and the syllables must go on match the metric of the melody.

       Which artists/musicians influenced the sound of G.O.T.H?What kind of music do you usually listen to?

Kate- I like modern music, my favorite singer is Tarja Turunen and I love this musical genre called symphonic metal like Nightwish (old style), Epica, Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, Iced Earth....

Ivan- I prefer the rock from 70 and 80s, my father’s influences. I'm fan of Elvis Presley, Aerosmith, Wasp, Iron Maiden, WhiteSnake, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple....

In relation to our sound I really don't know, I leave that to the discretion of others.

·    I’m curious about the American music scene.How things are doing over there? Are there any chances for young artists to reach success without taking part in realities/talent show?

Ivan- USA is very different from Europe, the US has one formula for music and production and Europe has another. In the US you have many good bands and they all want to be rock stars but honestly all the bands I know sound almost the same. I think You have two ways to win in music regardless of wether the music is good or bad, the first is the old school way, you play everywhere, bars, shops, show rooms etc....without worrying if you get money or not, the other way is to have someone to fund your music.

Kate- The first month we were there for the rehearsal and we needed 1 hour to get to the rehearsal room because it was in New Jersey, so we were in the car and every time we heard the same songs on the radio like a loop of 6 or 7 songs, and when we were returning home we still heard the same songs that were on the top.

Ivan- Same songs, almost like a torture. I don't blame the people I blame the system that inflicts to people the same artists whether they like it or not.

Kate- Because the radios are being paid to do things like that, what happens is that the music industry is becoming a temporary plastic product.

Ivan- Hail to those who don't let rock die because what concerns me is when stars like Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Aerosmith, etc... will die, who will make history in 50 years?

Kate - These TV programs are made to make money based on the values and dreams of the participants and of course some people and sponsors of this format are happy because they know they're going to make a lot of money during the program and much more when it's over.

Ivan- These programs are like a war, for example the war between the West and the East, the West sell guns and ammunition to the East, it's the same, the shows have a multinational television format behind, so they give to eat what they want people to eat. People should know that these multinational companies do this because they know they're going to make millions, the winner of one of these programs signed a contract with a multinational, because the publisher doesn't run any risk in the business because they know that people already know the artist. The winning artist releases an album, plays shows, sells his image, which is great, but then he or she is forgotten in a matter of months.

     Even the most experienced performers get nervous before playing on stage.What about you guys?Do you feel nervy&anxious before a gig?

Kate- We are always a little anxious before the shows because we want to be as confortable as possible. A couple of hours before going on stage each one has his/her moment to prepare, I personally like to do something, Ivan prefers to be alone.

Ivan- I have my own ritual before the show I don't like to talk to anyone, just alone in a room preparing myself, then 10 minutes before I go to the band to make the war scream.

Kate- Our album has been released on 17th of June via Musicarchy Media.
