Prog Metal rules:interview with Deadly Circus Fire

Devo fare una premessa.Quando si parla di Inghilterra inizio a non capire più niente e a lanciarmi in complimenti,convenevoli e cerimonie che nemmeno per Sua Santità:chiedo venia,ma è proprio così;ho una totale fascinazione e un amore spropositato per Londra.
Ci vado spesso,ho studiato alla CSM e al Chelsea College.Insomma,una parte del mio cuore è rimasta là.
Ma questa forte affinità che mi unisce alla terra di Albione non mi impedisce di valutare con senno(e un pizzico di autorevolezza,dai,in fondo bazzico il music business da un bel po' ormai..)il valore e l'appeal di progetti in campo artistico(dalla moda alla musica,passando per l'arte...)

Affascinata sì.Obnubilata no.


E' quindi un piacere IMMENSO per me presentarvi questa band che arriva  Londra.Sono 4 giovani e promettenti inglesi,si chiamano Deadly Circus Fire  e hanno da poco pubblicato la loro seconda fatica musicale con l'etichetta Musicarchy:The Hydra's Tailor è un concentrato adrenalinico di 12 pezzi dal potente impatto musicale.
Segni particolari?Un sound che spacca e una voce interessante che crea un unicum decisamente particolare.
Carisma,personalità e talento:eh sì,il nuovo che avanza arriva proprio dalla Gran Bretagna!

Ciao Save!L'Italia sa ancora poco di voi.Ti va di presentare i Deadly Circus Fire?Come è nato il gruppo?

Io e Paul ci siamo incontrati verso la fine del 2008.Condividevamo la stessa visione musicale e avevamo l'ambizione di creare qualcosa che fosse nello stesso tempo interessante,innovativa ma anche  musicalmente accessibile.
 Dopo infinite audizioni per trovare il cantante e il bassista,alla fine sono arrivati Adam e Mike.
 I Deadly Circus Fire sono quindi ufficialmente nati nel 2009 .Nei primi mesi del  2010 è uscito il nostro primo EP autoprodotto,che ha ricevuto moltissimi feedback positivi:in quel momento abbiamo capito che avremmo potuto creare qualcosa di veramente speciale senza cedere a nessun tipo di compromesso,sviluppando un suono migliore;sempre consapevoli però che non sarebbe stato facile remare contro la corrente musicale  mainstream.


Il nome Deadly Circus Fire si riferisce ad un tragico evento realmente accaduto negli Stati Uniti nel lontano 1944.Per quale motivo avete scelto di chiamare la band in questo modo?E' vero che agli inizi della vostra carriera utilizzavate un trucco da clown durante le esibizioni?Ora lo avete abbandonato del tutto?

 Stavamo seduti in un bar dopo una delle prime prove in studio e Adam,improvvisamente,tiro' fuori dalla borsa un libro che parlava dei piu' grandi disastri accaduti nel mondo.Abbiamo così letto della storia di questo terribile incendio accaduto il 6 luglio 1944 in un circo del Connecticut.Tantissime persone morirono,e molte altre rimasero ferite.La leggenda legata a questo tragico fatto narra di alcuni clown del circo che cercarono di aiutare le persone presenti all'evento buttandosi tra le fiamme. I clown non ne uscirono più vivi.Abbiamo trovato questa storia molto triste,ma allo stesso tempo illuminante.

Esattamente,durante le nostre performance on stage utilizzavamo un trucco da clown per rendere omaggio a queste persone che morirono nell'incendio.
Ma quando abbiamo pubblicato "The Hydra's tailor"abbiamo percepito che una nuova era stava iniziando per i Deadly Circus Fire:volevamo che la gente si concentrasse maggiormente sulla nostra musica invece che sui nostri outfit di scena.

Parliamo della vostra ultima fatica, "The Hydra's Tailor",pubblicata la scorsa estate.Come descriveresti questo album?Le chitarre pesanti insieme alla melodia formano un mix irresistibile:lo trovo veramente pazzesco!

Idra era un essere mitologico mostruoso che,quando gli si tagliava la testa,dal moncherino ne ricrescevano altre due;quindi il significato che sta dietro il titolo è che il sarto(cioè noi)continua incessantemente a confezionare abiti senza vedere all'orizzonte una soluzione finale positiva.Ovviamente si tratta di una metafora che rispecchia perfettamente l'odierna società che ci circonda:lavorare per raggiungere qualcosa in un ambiente che ci rende la vita sempre più complicata.E' un po' il pensiero che sta dietro al viaggio dei Deadly Circus Fire.


 Quale tipo di musica ascoltate di solito?E quali fonti di ispirazione vi aiutano nel processo creativo?

 Al di là del genere musicale,penso che esistano solo due tipi di musica:buona e cattiva.Proviamo ad ascoltare solo buona musica ovviamente. Le fonti di ispirazioni possono essere diverse;a volte improvvisiamo in jam session per ore e,inaspettatamente,ci guardiamo e iniziamo a sorridere tutti nello stesso momento:quello è l'attimo in cui realizziamo di avere tirato fuori qualcosa di interessante.

 The Hydra's Tailor è il vostro secondo cd.Quali sono le differenze con il vostro primo album,The King and the Bishop?

Siamo diventati più forti musicalmente dopo anni di battaglie contro il sistema mainstream.Siamo cresciuti e migliorati,sia umanamente che come artisti.

Nella vostra biografia leggo:"la battaglia contro il mainstream,ovvero la tendenza dominante, è appena iniziata".Puoi spiegarci meglio questa definizione?Cosa detesti in modo particolare del music biz?

Stare in una band oggi è piu' complicato di quanto si pensi.E non lo capisci finché non ci stai in mezzo.Programmi come XFactor danno alla gente una visione distorta  rispetto a quello che il mondo musicale in realtà è.
Siamo influenzati da gruppi che rimangono sempre se stessi e non si piegano alle logiche del mercato che confeziona prodotti pop.

Dagli anni 60 a oggi,la musica più interessante e cool arriva  dal Regno Unito.Gli artisti inglesi hanno veramente una marcia in più.Cosa vi rende così speciali?Qual è il vostro segreto?

Non so dirti cosa ci rende diversi dagli altri artisti.So per certo però cosa rende i DCF quello che siamo:la forte determinazione nel non accettare compromessi nello scrivere musica,così come il nostro background e le molteplici esperienze musicali .Stiamo cercando di spingere il Prog Metal verso una nuova destinazione,da 4 differenti direzioni diverse.Non vogliamo essere presuntuosi e dire che abbiamo creato un nuovo genere progressive-metal,ma sicuramente siamo riusciti a sviluppare la nostra speciale chimica musicale,come si può ascoltare nel suond dei DCF

Lo scorso novembre avete suonato in Italia,come band di supporto degli Skindred.Come è andata?Eravate spaventati,entusiasti,felici...Avete avuto l'occasione di incontrare il pubblico italiano,che sensazioni vi ha regalato?

Di sicuro non spaventati.Questo è cio' che facciamo. Un insegnante che entra in classe è forse spaventato?Eravamo certamente emozionati di essere in Italia e suonare con gli Skindred;e siccome io e Mike siamo Italiani,è stato un onore per noi esibirci nel nostro paese d'origine.Il pubblico italiano è stato molto accogliente e caloroso.Ci siamo divertiti molto.Speriamo di tornare presto.

Ultima domanda:i vostri progetti per il futuro.Ci sarà un altro tour in giro per l'Europa?

Abbiamo appena concluso il tour di supporto agli Skindred.Attualmente stiamo lavorando a stretto contatto con la nostra etichetta e i nostri agenti per programmare altri concerti in più paesi possibili e raggiungere un'audience di ascoltatori più ampia.E al momento giusto arriverà anche il terzo album.

1-Hi guys!Here in Italy we still know a little about you.Would you like to introduce yourself to the Italian audience?

Save and Paul met late 2008. They shared a common musical vision to create something interesting/ different but accessible at the same time. After carrying out countless auditions for a bass players and a singers, eventually they found Mike and Adam.

Officially formed in 2009, Deadly Circus Fire self produced/released their EP in the beginning of 2010. With all the positive feedback received, they understood they could make something special if they persevere without compromise, developing their sound further, knowing it would not be easy, rowing against the mainstream tide.

2- DEADLY CIRCUS FIRE refers to a real and tragic event.(happened in the US in 1944).Why did you choose this name for the band?I read that you used to play with a zombie clown make up on at the beginning of your career.Is it true?And why did you abandon this disguise?

We were sitting at the bar after one of our the first rehearsal. Adam pulled from his bag a book about the biggest world's forgotten disasters. We read about the story of this circus fire that happened on the 6th July 1944 in Connecticut, US. Many people died and many more were injured. The legend attached to it says that few clowns working for the circus jumped into the fire trying to save lives of those were attending the show. Those clowns never walked back alive from it. We thought that was a sad as well as an inspiring story. 

Yes, we did used to wear clown make up in honour of those people who died in this tragedy. But with the release of "The Hydra's Tailor", we felt a new era for DCF had started and we wanted people to be focused on our music and not on our stage outfit.

3-Let's talk about your new album The Hydra's Tailor,published last summer.How would you describe it?Would you call it "a concept album"?Melody and heavy guitars create a very special mix:i find it extremely cool!

 

The Hydra was a mythical creature that when it had its head cut off two more replaced it. So the meaning behind it was the tailor (like us) would be remaking clothes and suits forever with no successful end in sight. A metaphor on working to achieve something for a society that keeps changing to make your life harder. Thought it reflected DCF's journey.

4-What kind of music do you usually listen to guys?There is a special source of inspiration that helps create your music?

Regardless from the genre, we think there are only two types of music. Bad and good. We try to listen to good ones. Source of inspiration can be different. Sometimes we jam for hours and suddenly we all look at each other and we are all smiling at the same moment. That's the moment we understand we have come up with something interesting.

5-The Hydra's Tailor is your second cd.What about the differences between it and your debut  album The King and the Bishop?

It represents us becoming something stronger musically after years of fighting against the mainstream flow. We have grown and progressed personally and musically.

6-It's written in your bio: "the battle with the mainstream has just begun".That sounds interesting.Can you explain this definition better?What exactly you don't like about the music biz?

Being in a band today is harder than anyone would think.

You won't realise it until you are part of it. 

Programs like X factor are given people a perverse and distorted vision of what the real music world actually is. 

We are influenced by bands that fight to stay who they are and never become another factory made pop product. Bands that play what they believe is music to them.

7-You come from England.From the 60s to present days the most interesting music comes from the "island named Albion".English

bands and artists have something special,original and awesome.Which are your secrets,guys?

We don't know what makes us different from other artists. But we do know what makes DCF the way it is. It's the strong determination in not accepting any compromises when it comes to writing music, as well as our songwriting approach and varied musical backgrounds and experiences. We are trying to push the Prog Metal ship to a new destination, from four very different directions. We are not pretentious in thinking we have create a new progressive metal genre, but we definitely have create our own musical chemistry between us, resulting in Deadly Circus Fire's sound.

8-Last month you played in Italy, as opening act of  Skindred.How did you feel about it?Were you scared,enthusiastic,eager?And you also had the chance to taste

the Italian audience:how did you find it? 

Not scared. This is what we do. Would be a teacher scared to walk into a classroom? 

But definitely excited to play Italy and support Skindred. As well as Save and Mike are Italian, so for them was an honour to play their motherland. Italian audience was very friendly and welcoming. We had a great time. Hope to be back soon.

9-A last question:What about your future plans guys?Are you going on tour around Europe?

We have just finished up our European tour supporting Skindred.

We are working closely with our Label and Agents planning further tours and shows in as many countries as possible so to bring Deadly Circus Fire's music to a wider audience, keeping our loyal fan-base growing. We are also planning the third album when the right time comes.
